Michael Stramaglia, Corporate Director and Risk Management Consultant

Mr. Stramaglia is a professional corporate director and the President and Founder of Matrisc Advisory Group, a management consulting firm that specializes in providing Enterprise Risk Management consulting services to the financial services sector. He is currently the Executive in Residence at the Global Risk Institute and serves as an independent corporate director with Foresters and the Economical Insurance Group.

His professional career spans over 30 years and includes a number of senior executive positions with some of the world’s leading insurance organizations. From 2002 and 2013, Mr. Stramaglia worked with Sun Life Financial where he held a number of senior executive positions including Executive Vice-President and Chief Risk Officer of Sun Life’s worldwide operations, where he oversaw the development of one of the industry’s leading global risk management practices. Mr. Stramaglia joined Sun Life Financial in 2002 following its acquisition of Clarica, where he held the position of Executive Vice-President & Chief Investment Officer and was also responsible for the Company’s global reinsurance business. Prior to joining Clarica at the time of their IPO formation via the demutualization of Mutual Life in 1999, Mr. Stramaglia had a 13 year career with the Zurich Financial Services Group, where he assumed increasing accountabilities within the Canadian insurance operations including Chief Actuary, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer and President and Chief Executive Officer of Zurich Life Insurance Company of Canada, and ultimately assumed the role of President and Chief Operating Office for all of Zurich’s consolidated Canadian life, P&C and investment management operations.

Mr. Stramaglia has been an active participant and sought-after speaker for a wide range of industry risk management-related forums, and served as the 2013 Chair of the Canadian Reinsurance Conference. He is a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst, Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. He also holds the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate  Directors and an Honours Bachelor of Mathematics Degree (Actuarial Science and Statistics) from the University of Waterloo.
