Bernard Dorval, Deputy Chair, TD Canada Trust

Mr. Dorval has held the role of Deputy Chair, TD Canada Trust since 2003. Currently as Deputy Chair, Bernard Dorval focuses primarily on the development of TD’s presence in the Quebec market across all sectors of activity of TD Bank Group while providing strategic advice to the Executive Management Team. He is also the Chairman of the Board of TD Insurance. 
Until recently, Mr. Dorval was Group Head of Insurance and Global Development. In this capacity, he was responsible for the Insurance businesses of TD including TD Insurance and TD Insurance Meloche Monnex home and auto businesses, as well as, life and health and credit protection products in Canada. He was also responsible for international reinsurance and the insurance brokerage services in the U.S.  Bernard. Dorval was simultaneously the Lead Senior Executive Team member responsible for TD's strategic development in emerging markets, primarily leading the establishment of representation offices in India and China. As Deputy Chair, TD Canada Trust, he also worked in close collaboration with the management team of personal and commercial banking services in Canada and contributed to the global business strategy as well as to TD Canada Trust’s overall orientation.

Mr. Dorval joined Canada Trust in 1995 after holding several senior executive positions covering all aspects of insurance and financial services during his 22 years with the Laurentian Group of Companies, culminating with his appointment as President and CEO of Laurentian Financial in 2004. After joining the senior management team of Canada Trust in 1995 as Head of its Insurance business, he led the acquisition of several Insurance Companies including Meloche Monnex in 1997. He went on to hold a variety of senior executive roles at Canada Trust in the areas of insurance, investments and lending.

Following the TD Canada Trust merger in 2000, he moved into the role of Executive Vice President for the overall Retail Product Group where, among other things, he oversaw the successful merger and integration of all personal banking, lending, cards and small business product, credit and administrative related activities of TD Canada Trust until his appointment as Executive Vice President, Business Banking & Insurance and Deputy Chair, TD Canada Trust in 2003.

From 2005 to 2008, Bernard Dorval was Group Head, Business Banking and Insurance and Co-Chair, TD Canada Trust. His responsibilities included all aspects of the commercial and small business customer experience, from product development to sales and training assistance for the Bank's delivery channels, in addition to his responsibilities as Head of the Insurance business.

Mr. Dorval is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society and is a graduate of the University of Laval, where he was a guest teacher with the School of Actuarial Science from 1978-1984. Mr. Dorval was a recipient of Young Executive of the Year Award in 1983 by the Montreal Junior Chamber of Commerce and was recognized five years in a row (from 2007 to 2011) as one of the Top 25 in Quebec’s Financial Services Industry by Finance et Investissement.
