Michael Firth, Partner, Tax Services, PwC

Mike Firth is a Tax Services partner in the Toronto office of PwC Canada. He specializes in GST issues affecting the financial sector, and is a member of the firm's Canadian National Tax Services group.

Mike has more than 30 years experience working with indirect taxes, including the European Value Added tax (VAT) and Canada’s Goods and Services tax (GST). He was awarded the 2009 and 2007 Normand Guérin Award for his advancement of commodity tax studies. More recently, Mike was featured in 'The Comprehensive Guide to the World's Leading Indirect Tax Advisers' by International Tax Review, based on a survey of their readers.

In 1990, Mike moved to PwC Canada to help clients with GST implementation. Before joining the Canadian firm, he specialized in VAT in the financial sector at PwC’s London, UK office. He also spent ten years with the UK Customs and Excise department in various VAT audit and enforcement roles.

An acknowledged advisor in the 1994 Finance Committee Report on GST reform, Michael has also worked in both Barbados and Australia assisting clients and industry associations with their GST implementation. Mike was an invited witness to the House of Commons Finance Committee to comment on the GST clauses in the 2010 Budget Bill.

Mike is a longstanding editorial board member of CCH Canadian Limited's Canadian GST Monitor. He has assisted a number of industry associations with a broad range of GST issues, and is a frequent speaker and writer on GST matters. Mike has served as a tutor at numerous CICA GST In-Depth courses, and has also presented frequently at the CICA Commodity Tax Symposium. He was also the chair of the 2009 GST Leaders Forum.
